Like Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool 2, this was another case of a somewhat misleading advertising campaign not backfiring because the movie in-question still delivered the goods. They passed me by, all of those great romances And, be it a case of “brand trumps stardom” or audiences not minding the switcheroo, Universal was able to sell a mostly Streep-free Mamma Mia 2 to relative success and surprising acclaim. It was an interesting gambit for Universal, Richard Curtis and friends to make a Mamma Mia! sequel without its big “butts-in-the-seat” movie star. If it crosses $104 million, it’ll at least be her 12th biggest grosser accounting for inflation.

Kramer ($106.2m in 1979) to become Streep’s sixth-biggest grosser behind It’s Complicated ($112m in 2009), Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events ($118.6m in 2004), The Devil Wears Prada ($124.7m in 2006), Into the Woods ($128m in 2014) and Mamma Mia! ($144.1m in 2008).

But if Mamma Mia 2 earns at least $106.3m domestic, it’ll pass Kramer Vs. No, it’s (presumably) not getting that close to the $609m global cume of the first Mamma Mia!, and the usual caveats (inflation, overseas expansion, exchange rates, etc.) still apply. With $230 million-and-counting, it will soon pass The Devil Wears Prada ($326m in 2006) to become Streep’s second-biggest global grosser. sold Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again as a Meryl Streep movie even as she is mostly present in spirit. There's certainly more of Meryl in the Mamma Mia 2 marketing than there was of Mark Hamill in the Force Awakens campain. Without necessarily lying or misleading anyone, Universal/Comcast Corp. Sure, the trailers don’t hide the fact that Donna has mysteriously absent, but there is plenty of Streep bits in the trailers and she is in much of the film’s print advertising. What’s interesting about Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is that Meryl Streep is front-and-center in much of the marketing. Oh, and at least some of the marketing for Scream sold Drew Barrymore as a key player and not the opening victim. And had Simon Birch been a giant hit in 1998, then Jim Carrey’s box office record book would have been a bit more complicated since he appears unbilled as the film’s narrator. If you recall, he shows up in the fillm’s opening sequence in a “fake” Austin Powers movie that also “stars’ Gwyneth Paltrow and Kevin Spacey. Tom Cruise’s biggest opening weekend is technically the $73 million launch of Austin Powers: Goldmember.

There are plenty of examples of big stars for whom their biggest grossers (or one of their biggest grossers) is a movie in which they barely appear. Anyway, Meryl Streep has very little screen time in Here We Go Again. Yes, it’s a Godfather Part II narrative, right down the emotional switcheroo (the first film had a happy young Sophie and a sad adult Donna, while the sequel reverses that). The film alternates between flashbacks of a young Donna (Lily James) meeting the three men who would all become the possible fathers for young Sophie and present-day drama of married-and-pregnant Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) trying to reopen her mom’s hotel while figuring out how best to move on. This isn’t a spoiler, but you find out in the very first moments of Ol Parker’s sequel that Donna, the last film’s protagonist, has died a year prior to this film’s story.
